Disaster Relief |
Since we support youth groups whose members are high school and college
students, our availability for disaster
relief is limited to the period of time that students are not attending
school classes.
It is possible to
get guidance from the Christian
Reformed Disaster Relief Office in Grand
Rapids to help identify work sites in disaster areas. With professional guidance
is is possible to be assigned work
that can use teenage student skills to the best
advantage with adult supervision. When we contacted the Red
Cross office in Grand Rapids we were told that they can not
help student groups find specific work projects.
We have recently installed
new tires and have sent our bus/youth group motor home to a local truck
repair facility, Valley
Truck Parts Inc., and had it mechanically checked and
prepared for travel to work sites. The mechanics
at Valley Truck Parts completely checked and serviced the vehicle, telling
us that it is in very good mechanical condition. They made some
repairs, adjustments, and changed all major fluids and filters.
We have a 1 ton capacity army trailer that
we can use to carry tools and additional supplies to disaster areas.
We have purchased a good used, 5KW portable generator to take with us.
Groups have the
responsibility for providing
their own food, and for providing fuel for the "bus" (8mpg)
and the 7KW on-board generator (.5 gph). The
two refrigerators, chest freezer, and other electrical appliances on the
"bus" require the on-board generator to be used about 12 hours
per day. We can carry enough food for a 16 member youth group for more
than a week. Any financial contributions for food and fuel would be
appreciated by any student group that uses our support.
Since we require any
group that we support to provide their own personal, and public liability
insurance coverage while on a work project, any help in this area would be
appreciated.
Usually, a church, school or
other organization, asking for our support, contacts their insurance
company and has their insurance company provide an
insurance certificate showing that each of their group
members is insured with liability and personal injury coverage by their insurance
company and an insurance certificate showing William & LaVerne
Blickley / Wherever God Wills youth
group support service as an additional insured on the certificate for
this event. This sometimes requires a small additional
premium to be paid to the insurance company by the group.
West Michigan Student
groups interested in doing disaster relief using our support services
during the Spring and Summer of 2006 should review this web site and send us a completed
application.
